Two terrifyingly precocious kids; two very different paths. Fanny Mendelssohn was seventeen when she wrote her Piano Quartet. A brilliant pianist with an impressive memory, she became one of the most prolic female composers of her century. As an upper-class woman, however, a public ‘career’ was unthinkable; and she published her music only shortly before her death at 41. Her little brother Felix’s gripping and beautiful 3rd Quartet shows his astonishing, preternatural musical ability—and it was written when he was 16! Hear these delicious rarities performed on the kinds of instruments their first audiences would have heard.
